What is an aromatherapy candle?
An aromatherapy candle combines essential oils with a wax base (typically rapeseed, beeswax, or coconut) to deliver therapeutic benefits through scent when burned. Unlike regular scented candles that use synthetic fragrances, aromatherapy candles use pure essential oils known for specific effects like:
- Lavender for relaxation and sleep
- Peppermint for energy and focus
- Eucalyptus for breathing and clarity
- Bergamot for mood lifting
These candles work through the olfactory system, where inhaled essential oil molecules trigger responses in the brain affecting mood, stress levels, and wellbeing.
What makes Wizard & Grace candles different
While there are hundreds of candle brands out in the market, from big to small, the vast majority use synthetic fragrance to scent. And what's more EVEN THE CANDLES THAT SAY NATURAL CAN USE SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE.
Founder Paula created Wizard & Grace candles as she became allergic to synergic fragrance following the birth of her daughter. Once she realised her expensive luxury candles were in fact synthetic and causing her to react, she researched the area extensively. She could not find what she was looking for and so set out to make her own and here we are.
What is the difference between synthetic fragrance and essential oils? Part 1
Before we get into the technical element of this, one question back to you - would you go for a walk on a summer's day with flowers and plants blooming and alive around you? I'm going to assume the answer is yes. Would you possibly breathe in the beautiful fragrant smell of nature? Again I'm going to assume yes.
Would you then think to yourself - you know what - that smell isn't strong enough and take out an artificial synthetic version of a floral or plant smell and spray around you to get an effect?
I'm going to assume no.
So why buy candles with artificial alternatives to nature when you use essential oils -literal scent extracted from plants?
What is the difference beween synthetic fragrance and essential oils? Part 2
Essential oils come from plants - they are the liquefied versions of plants and herbs.
Synthetic fragrance is made in a factory, sometimes with a drop of an essential oil but mostly other chemical ingredients. These ingredients can be quality but they may not be. Fragrance is a highly unregulated area.
Why should I choose an essential oil candle over a synthetic fragrance candle?
We use essential oils in our candles for many reason:
1) They are 100% natural, plant extracts, no additives, no synthetics.
2) Essential oils and aromatherapy have wellbeing elements and it is thought certain oils can be used for certain wellbeing conditions and supports. For each candle we start with the intention we would like to create then we select essential oils to match and blend into a beautiful fragrance.
3) They smell better. Smell is subjective of course but in our view, a natural plant fragrance will always be superior to a fake fragrance.
4) They can be less toxic and more clean burning than synthetic fragrances.
What makes Wizard & Grace candles special?
Our luxury aromatherapy candles are hand-poured in Ireland using pure essential oils and sustainable rapeseed wax. Each candle is crafted to create specific mood-enhancing benefits while maintaining our commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Why do you use rapeseed and coconut wax and not soy?
Soy wax is a problematic wax to use as it is causing deforestation and social justice issues in origin countries (mostly South America). Soy wax - even GMO soy is problematic. Soy is a plant but as a crop is not particularly sustainable or renewable. Soy fields should have 18 months imbetween crops to recover, With the demand for soy wax and soy products this is not happening leading to a destruction of the land.
Rapeseed and coconut wax are easy to grow, readily available. Rapeseed is in abundance locally. It is the most renewable and sustainable wax currently available on the market.
What makes Wizard & Grace candles natural and sustainable?
We use:
- 100% natural rapeseed and coconut wax
- Pure essential oils (no synthetic fragrances)
- Lead-free cotton wicks
- Recyclable glass containers
- Biodegradable and compostable packaging materials
